Escondido Choral Arts presents The Center Chorale, symphony orchestra and soloists joining the Mojalet Dance Collective in the west coast premier of Alec Roth’s modern cantata, A Time to Dance. Also on the program will be the timeless Magnificat of J. S. Bach.
Soloists for both works are Caroline Nelms, soprano, Janelle DeStefano, mezzo-soprano, John Russell, tenor, and Michael Blinco, bass. Roth’s cantata will have portions danced by Faith Jensen-Ismay’s local dance ensemble, the Mojalet Dance Collective. Joe Stanford, long-time North County music educator, singer, and conductor, conducts a professional Baroque style orchestra of local musicians, the Center Chorale and soloists.
Stanford says of this event that it is “one of the most exciting new pieces that has been composed in many years. The soloists are fantastic, and it is exciting to collaborate with Jensen-Ismay’s Mojalet Dance Collective”. Those who know the work of The Center Chorale will remember the Karl Orff Carmina Burana performance in 2014 that was interpreted in dance by this internationally acclaimed contemporary dance company that performs with a passion to share the beauty of expression through movement.
“This is a real feather in our cap to be presenting a new work to our listeners, Stanford says. A Time to Dance was first performed in England five years ago. Then it was introduced to the US on the east coast in May of last year. What a privilege it is for us to bring this fabulous new music to the San Diego area. The music to A Time to Dance is modern, but not harshly dissonant and is thoroughly entertaining.”
