Technical
Outreach Educational Program
Have you ever wondered how professional theatre happens? How do technical crews know when to take their cues? How can a single person make a two thousand pound car fly into the rafters? What does it take for a big touring play or concert to pull up to a theatre at eight in the morning and be ready for a show just twelve hours later? We can “show and tell” you how the magic happens. For local high school theatre classes and clubs, the Center’s Technical Production staff offers short technical demonstrations in our 404-seat theatre. This is an opportunity for students and teachers to have direct access to professionals in the field. We can show you some of the tricks of our trade, and give you an honest appraisal of what it takes to make a career in the world of technical theatre. Participants also get the chance to ask the staff questions about theatre, life working in theatre, and why we love what we do. We understand that it is not always possible for groups to come to the Center to participate in our demonstrations. For that reason the technical staff is also available to come to your school and talk to your class or club. We will be happy to speak about technical theatre, stage management, or theatre life in general. We can also make a presentation at your school’s career day. Whether you come to the Center, or the technical staff comes to you, we will also share the opportunities offered by the Center’s Stage Technician Intern program. The program gives high school graduates the opportunity to work as stagehands at the Center and get paid while they learn about theatre. People of all levels of theatrical knowledge who are interested in learning while working in a diverse and challenging field are welcome to apply. While the Stage Technician Intern program is open to all interested high school graduates, technical demonstrations and talks by the Center staff are services offered to Escondido-area high schools and clubs only. Due to the demanding nature of the Center’s production schedule, we need as much advance notice as possible to schedule a demonstration in our theatre or to have us come to your school. Please contact us at (760) 839-4145, or by email at rcollier@artcenter.org, to inquire about available dates and times. |
