José Guadalupe Posada: Legendary Printmaker of Mexico

September 18 – November 21, 2021

This exhibition features artworks from one of Mexico’s most celebrated artists, José Guadalupe Posada.

Posada’s satirical skeletons (calaveras) are instantly recognizable. His artwork lampooned politicians, recorded images from the Mexican Revolution, and inspired artists to use their art for social causes. Posada’s iconic imagery also adorned concert tickets for the Grateful Dead and his calaveras are emblematic of Día de los Muertos imagery.

Special thanks to Landau Traveling Exhibitions, the Catalina Island Museum, and the Posada Art Foundation.

Muerte y Monstruos: Papier-Mâché from the Larry Kent Collection

September 18 – November 21, 2021

Muerte y Monstruos (Death and Monsters) features selected artworks by Mexico City’s Linares family. Generously on loan from the Larry Kent Collection, these traditional artworks straddle the line between “folk” and “fine” art.

The Linares’ famous sculptures depicting alebrijes and calaveras are often associated with Día de los Muertos imagery and are symbolic of Mexico’s rich artistic heritage.
