Rafael Payare, conductor
Alisa Weilerstein, cello

San Diego Symphony’s special guest, cellist Alisa Weilerstein, best describes Prokofiev’s expansive, romantic and fiendishly difficult work, the Sinfonia concertante for Cello and Orchestra, by advising: “Buckle up! You’re in for a really wild and a really thrilling ride. There are such moments of raw beauty and simple chaos, which are surrounded by some of the more spiky writing. I think people will be pleasantly surprised.” And, as if that’s not enough, the evening ends with Beethovens famously riveting Symphony No. 5.

Program:
Carl Maria von Weber: Overture to Der Freischütz (The Marksman)
Serge Prokofiev: Sinfonia concertante for Cello and Orchestra in E minor, Op. 125
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67
