Frida Kahlo & Dia de Los Muertos Flower Pots
with Katie Gaines
More Frida-inspired artwork coming your way! In honor of The World of Frida Exhibition, now showing at the Museum, you’ll be able to follow along with this step-by-step tutorial to create your own Frida Kahlo inspired, or Dia de Los Muertos themed flower pot!
Follow along with local artist, Katie Gaines, to paint a very Frida-fitting flower pot. Frida was known for wearing vibrant flower prints, and of course, her famous floral headbands. Why not grow your own flowers in your Frida-styled flower pots?
Harkening also from the Mexican tradition is a Dia de Los Muertos themed Frida flower pot. If you’re feeling extra festive, we’d love to see you make both flower pots!
Clay (terra cotta) flower pots. I used 4.75″ clay pots. (Get two if you want to create both Fridas)
Paper plate, paper towels
Cup of water for rinsing brushes
Assorted colors of multi-surface craft paint. I went with CraftSmart satin multi-surface craft paint in natural beige, parchment, black, coral, pink. green, aqua blue. Choose any colors you’d like for decorating the pot. For Frida’s face, you’ll at least need black, white, pink, orange. For the sugar skull Frida, choose a bright, colorful color palette, along with black and white.
