Photography Expanded: Distinct Approaches

September 30 – November 12, 2017

Photography Expanded: Distinct Approaches features a select group of contemporary Southern California artists who are taking the manipulation of light to a new level. Thought-provoking imagery as well as an appreciation for more traditional work from the original masters is at the crux of this exhibition.  The visual dialogue created by these divergent periods of photographic history parallels in unique ways to the present-day art photographer who challenges our ideas of what photography is and can be. These artworks take a distinct approach using a wide range of progressive aesthetics, materials and technologies to examine contemporary imagemaking. Among other themes, the artwork displayed here focuses on a fresh look at photojournalism, portraiture, conceptualism, digital manipulation, landscape, spirituality and storytelling. These artists are undoubtedly forever connected to the roots and traditions of photography, yet each expands the vocabulary and use of modern processes to give us a whole-new experience of the medium.

The California Center for the Arts, Escondido Museum would like to first thank the artists who are part of this exhibition for their participation and creativity. We would also like to recognize Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, Inc. and Katharine Carter Art Consultants in New York and the Museum of Photographic Art. This exhibit is sponsored by grants from the County of San Diego Community Enhancement Program and the California Arts Council.
