IRA Charitable Distribution

Can Your IRA and Your Taxes Help the Center?*

If you are 70 ½ or older, you are eligible to make a tax-free gift of up to $100,000 to the Center directly from an IRA. Often called the “IRA Charitable Distribution,” your donation would count toward satisfying your required minimum distribution for the year and provide vital support for us to provide thousands of local students with arts education programs and our community with a variety of free concerts and festivals throughout the year.

The tax-free treatment for a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) equates to an immediate 100% above-the-line deduction without any effect on the 50%-of-Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) limitation on cash contributions. Additionally, since the QCD lowers your AGI, there may be additional tax savings for items that are based on AGI such as lowering your monthly Medicare premium. You might also consider prepaying your 2019 charitable contributions, as with the new higher standard deductions, many taxpayers will get more benefit by claiming the standard deduction rather than itemizing. This is particularly the case when there is no home mortgage interest as the state and property tax deduction in 2018 is limited to $10,000.

The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions. You pay no income taxes on the gift and our support will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making in the community. If you are interested in contributing to the Center in this manner, consult with your financial advisor to make the arrangements. Our Community Engagement department will be happy to provide any additional information they may need at (760) 839-4159 or Philanthropy@artcenter.org

What’s the difference between a one-time “Donor Club” donation & being a “Mission Maker”?

While both are forms of tax-deductible financial support, Mission Makers is a monthly recurring gift program. Our Mission Makers are eligible for a variety of special benefits, whereas one-time “Donor Club” donations are not.

Whether you choose to give monthly or a one-time donation, you can rest easy knowing that both forms of support are equally helpful to keeping the arts alive and thriving in our community.
