California Center for the Arts, Escondido moves Drive-In Venue to CSUSM

Escondido,
CA – September 16, 2020: California Center for the Arts, Escondido is happy to announce a new location for our Drive-In venue at California State University, San Marcos.
“We are excited to have found a home at Cal State San Marcos,” Executive Director, Jerry Van Leeuwen said. “There is ample space to spread out on a grid that aligns well with the stage. We also took this opportunity to increase the height of our stage and our
three LED walls to ensure our patrons all have a great view. Nestled in the hillside under the stars, Lot F is a fantastic venue for live concerts, stand-up comedy as well as classic movies.”

More space means more savings for patrons. “With our new capacity of 400+ cars we are able to lower our ticket prices while adding more front row spaces for those who want to splurge on VIP,” Director of Performing Arts, Julianna Crespo explained. “Movies now start
at only $25 for 2 people in a car. The larger venue also opens the door to bigger-name artists!”

The Center couldn’t have made this transition to a new location without a little help.  “Our partners at Show Imaging helped us adapt and innovate throughout this entire process. They are a shining example of a company who has given back during the COVID crisis,”
Crespo said. “They have helped put crew members back to work and bring smiles back to audiences’ faces.”

The Drive-in at Cal State San Marcos kicks off this weekend Friday, September 18th with sing-along hit movie
Mama Mia! (sponsored by
CSL Staffing).

Saturday features jazz singer and multi-instrumentalist Gunhild Carling (sponsored
by Dr. Enil Bliesath General & Family Dentistry).

Sunday culminates in the big sounds of swing and jazz by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (sponsored
by Icon Utility Services).

The entire opening weekend is also sponsored by Grand Restaurant Group and their newest restaurant
Giaola Italian Kitchen located in Carlsbad.

Another generous partner has been Dr. Bronners. Each car is treated to a goody bag featuring their highly-coveted organic hand sanitizer and other items. “We welcome businesses looking for a way to get their products or brands in front of new customers and to show their support for the arts to contact us about sponsorship opportunities.”

Revenues from the Drive-in support the development and delivery of virtual arts education to North County schools, bringing “The World of Frida exhibition to the Center’s Museum and planning for future free community events. Rental fees for Lot F will help support the University’s School of Arts, an inclusive, collaborative community where artists, scholars, and students actively engage in developing artistic practices, critical thinking, cultural intelligence, and creativity.

CSUSM College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences Dean, Elizabeth Matthews, remarked: “CSUSM is pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to our community, and in a way that benefits our arts program. During this difficult time, it is essential
that we keep the arts alive while providing safe and responsible venues for our students and community to have cultural experiences.”

The Drive-In series will continue throughout the holidays.  Live concerts will include performances by Three Dog Night, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Runaway June, as well as stand-up comedy sets by Whitney Cummings, Taylor Tomlinson, and Iliza Shelsinger.  Drive-In movies will include showings of “Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark”, “Jurassic Park”, “West Side Story”, “The Princess Bride”, “Hocus Pocus” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”.  Tickets are available online at
